Abscence seizures :
- these seizures commonly begin in childhood and cease by the age of 20
- these seizures appear as sudden loss of consciousness without loss of postural control.
- seizures may be accompanied by bilateral motor signs such as rapid blinking of eyelids, chewing movements ,clonic movements of hands.
- EEG: it shows generalised ,symmetric ,3-Hz spike and wave discharge pattern lasting for few seconds superimposed on normal EEG.
- Hyperventilation tends to provoke these electrophysiological discharges and even seizures themselves.
- treatment: respond well to specific antiiconvulsants.
- prognosis:60-70% of cases show spontaneous remission during adolscence.
