Abscence seizures :
  1. these seizures commonly begin in childhood and cease by the age of 20
  2. these seizures appear as sudden loss of consciousness without loss of postural control.
  3. seizures may be accompanied by bilateral motor signs such as rapid blinking of eyelids,chewing movements ,clonic movements of hands.
  4. EEG: it shows generalised ,symmetric ,3-Hz spike and wave discharge pattern lasting for few seconds superimposed on normal EEG.
  5. Hyperventilation tends to provoke these electrophysiological discharges and even seizures themselves.
  6. treatment: respond well to specific antiiconvulsants.
  7. prognosis:60-70% of cases show spontaneous remission during adolscence.
